Welcome to the Engineered Safety Community of Practice
The Engineered Safety Group (ESG) is a Subcommittee of Engineers Australia, South Australia Division. To promote and carry out our discussions more broadly, we have started this Engineered Safety Community of Practice (ESCoP).
The ESG/ESCoP Committee includes experienced members of Engineers Australia from a number of engineering disciplines who are interested in, discuss and promote the things that engineers do to improve safety in industry and for the general public.
How is the ESG different than a typical safety group? The difference is that engineers use their knowledge and experience in maths and sciences to develop and put in place safety solutions based on engineering principles and practices to improve the design and operation of processes, structures and other things to make them safer.
Engineers contribute to safety differently than most other disciplines. We look at problems differently, seeking engineering solutions through better design, hazard controls and ergonomic improvements.
The ESG has developed a one-hour presentation called “Engineered Safety 101” targeting 3th and 4th year engineering students and early career engineers. The intent is to provide these students and starting engineers with awareness of a number of safety areas that engineers really must know as they progress further into industry.
Throughout the year we organise and host presentations via face-to-face, webinar, or a hybrid of both, on topics ranging from Nuclear, Safe Systems of Roads, Reasonably Practical Decision Making, Safety Factors for Engineers, ALARP and SFAIRP: Objectivity and Practicality, Safety Case Production and Management, and Safety in Design. We have several presentation evenings with panel sessions occurring each year which we will advertise throughout EA and on this ESCoP.
