    Dear Colleagues,

I have read many times about the difficulty that faces several migrant engineers in securing their first job in Australia, even if they have relevant experience in the same field. It seems that lack of local experience and the unfamiliarity with local standards to be a major obstacle.

To put things into perspective, I am a 40 year old civil engineer with 18 years of experience in major infrastructure projects in the Middle East (including multi billion dollar <qordoba-highlight-word data-id="issue-97aea6d3-81b5-47ff-ad07-ae9763f6a731" class="html-formatter issue-97aea6d3-81b5-47ff-ad07-ae9763f6a731 grammar-spelling active" tabindex="-1"><qordoba-highlight-word data-id="issue-97aea6d3-81b5-47ff-ad07-ae9763f6a731" class="html-formatter issue-97aea6d3-81b5-47ff-ad07-ae9763f6a731 grammar-spelling" tabindex="-1">project</qordoba-highlight-word></qordoba-highlight-word>). And hopefully I will be moving to Australia in the next few months. I know it is almost impossible to land a job while outside the country. So I wanted to invest these months in trying to enhance my profile and my knowledge of the construction industry in Australia.

I have found many useful materials on <qordoba-highlight-word data-id="issue-9348f0f7-862c-4eb8-ad49-1f518b818ff9" class="html-formatter issue-9348f0f7-862c-4eb8-ad49-1f518b818ff9 style" tabindex="-1"><qordoba-highlight-word data-id="issue-9348f0f7-862c-4eb8-ad49-1f518b818ff9" class="html-formatter issue-9348f0f7-862c-4eb8-ad49-1f518b818ff9 style" tabindex="-1">EA</qordoba-highlight-word></qordoba-highlight-word> on demand portal, and Create magazine. But all of that doesn't provide me with the deep insight and the level of detail that I think can help me with my goal.

I would like to hear from you all, what you think can help me to prepare before I land in Australia

Appreciate your generous contribution to this subject.

    Dear Khaled

The one and most important advise I will give is to reformat / rewrite your resume according to Australian standard.
In general people say there is no specific format for a country but I think it does make a difference. Please check on google and review the formats which in general Australia use.
Also, the job market presently is quite hot which means this is the right time to start applying for jobs. The best website is www.seek.com.au and linkedin.
There are many cases I know where people have landed job in Australia just by video interviews etc as long as you have got the right visa i.e. PR . So it is not impossible to land a job in Australia while you are outside Australia (especially in these times)
    So give your best effort.

    Regards
    Ahmad

When I've spoken to others in similar situations, they often believe the job-seeking problems they're having is because of their migrant status, but I don't think that is true.  Instead, they assume that the same job-searching techniques that worked in their home countries will work equally well in Australia.  They may not.  Their problem isn't lack of experience, qualifications, or skills, but a misunderstanding of how engineers are recruited in Australia.  I encourage learning how to get your applications to pass through the initial optical screenings, how to answer behavioural questions in interviews, how to score well on the personality and pattern recognition tests that will be given, and how to coach references to give the best referrals.

Also, don't assume that you cannot land a job before you arrive in Australia.  It's fairly easy and common to sort out employment arrangements before you arrive.  Good luck!

Thanks for your advice, I can see from what you said and also from Ahmad earlier that I need to focus on how to approach and present myself.
