As an overseas qualified engineer who came to Australia in 2008, I feel that in current times the tried and tested pathways that has borne fruit in the previous years have become outdated. The local skilled labor market has become more adventurous and have already started looking into bring in identified talents in other countries or may be open a branch then train the talents to get Australian experience and then bring them into the country if required. This makes harder for people coming in by applying offshore PR and other Visa's as there is a much bigger competition than before.
I have also noticed that the need is current, and the companies are looking for a fully developed talent who can hit the ground running, rather than someone who they can develop into, this means that there is a shortage for the experienced (local). This can be mainly due to the oversight on part of the companies or can be the post COVID boom. This actually creates a perfect storm for the new talents coming in - there is so many jobs around yet non them are available for a starter (that's what they are).
The old ways would be to keep applying, change the cover letter, modify the CV and network extensively. But I feel we should change that attitude and be open to newer methods - like Look for alternative paths to enter into the industry, identify job ready courses for the target industry, talk about integration into the system, soft skill developments along with applying for the jobs.
As a group I would like to suggest we would put on meetings and events were we can demonstrate the requirements to enter the industry, provide guidance on how to go about getting them and most importantly manage the expectation.
