    Posted 6 days ago

    Hi,

I am a migrant Civil Engineer with experience across Civil Infra, Commercial and Residential sectors. I have a MS in Civil Engineering and over a decade of experience. However, due to lack of local experience I have been unable to even get a single interview. I am looking for support in this matter. Please let me know if there are any opportunities that you may come across where I am at least given a chance to interview. I would also appreciate guidance/advice specific to migrant engineers.

    Sincerely,

    Amarjeet.

    Hi Prof. Trevelyan,

Thank you for reaching out and offering your support. I appreciate your willingness to help.

To clarify, I am currently looking for employment opportunities in the civil engineering/residential and commercial construction field, including any relevant volunteering roles that could provide hands-on experience. I hold a Master's in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University and am seeking opportunities to apply my skills in a professional setting.

I am not looking for academic guidance at this time, but if you have any employment-related advice or know of any opportunities, I would truly appreciate your insights.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Best regards,
    Amarjeet

    Hi Amarjeet,

    Hope you are doing well.

I know the struggle that you would be facing. I have personally gone through that phase.

Based on experience, i would recommend you search for Overseas Qualified professionals' program of the state you are in. Every state has some name for it. You would have to do a bit of research.

Additionally keep applying, look for even internship opportunities, voluntary work just to build your network. Try and attend all Engineer's Australia networking events. You'll get to interact with industry professionals. Prepare a good pitch for yourself.

Keep up the hard work. The big break is just round the corner.

    All the best.

    Regards,

    Hi Himanshu,

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your advice and insights. It's encouraging to hear from someone who has been through a similar journey and understands the challenges.

I will definitely look into the Overseas Qualified Professionals program in my state and explore networking opportunities, including Engineers Australia events. Your suggestions about internships and voluntary work align with my approach, and I will continue to pursue these avenues actively.

I would also love to stay connected for professional networking. If you're open to it, I'd be happy to connect with you on LinkedIn. Please feel free to share your profile, or I can send you a request.

Thank you again for your support and encouragement. Your words mean a lot, and I truly appreciate your guidance.

    Best regards,
    Amarjeet

    Hi Amarjeet,

I can understand your frustration because I was in the same situation long time ago. The only advise I can give which I also did, is try not to look for roles within your vicinity, Australia is big and has other cities and regional towns. Most engineers that has plenty of local experience wont move to a regional town unless it's a high paying fifo role, there should be some opportunity there, but you may need to compromise. Try also to apply in specific industry where you have previous overseas experience with.

Back then I don't understand why local experience is so important, but now I do. Because engineers need to learn how deal with different stakeholders, industry culture and solve problems that can be done by the local industry. Guiding, teaching and checking someones work is actually a loss time for employers.

Keep looking and hopefully you can land a role.
