The following has been provided by Dr Chen Hoe Ling, who is responsible for development of new Areas of Practice (AoP) in EA. These AoP and Areas of Engineering can be informative for education providers when developing their program  specifications for disciplines.  Academics are encouraged to get involved in developing new AoP.  Contact Dr Ling at [email protected] for more details.

In line with the AoP Model 2022, we are considering introducing new AoP and Specialisations that are important to lead the engineering profession and to support government plans in progressing the nation.

The AoP provide a home for the practising engineering professionals as an avenue to advocate for all things relating to the AoP.

The process of AoP development consists of 3 Steps:

Step 1: Purpose of the AoP: Business Case

Step 2: Competent, Independent Practice: Competency Framework

Step 3: Ongoing advocacy for the AoP

The timelines for each reclassification vary and is envisaged to commence from 2025.

Dam engineering as a new Specialisation is also currently under development with its respective stakeholders. This is targeted for introduction end 2024.

The Rail Track and Rail Signalling Specialisations are currently in the process of finalisation

The following are the list of prospective AoPs that have been proposed for consideration with the targeted dates for introduction in parentheses:

  • Cyber Engineering (targeted for 1Q 2024)
  • Software Engineering (targeted for mid 2024)
  • Clean Energy Engineering (targeted for 3Q 2024)
  • Hydrogen Engineering (targeted for mid 2024)
  • Nuclear Engineering (targeted for 1Q 2024)
  • Manufacturing Engineering (targeted for end 2024)
  • Maritime Engineering (targeted for end 2024)
  • Transport Engineering (targeted for end 2024)
  • Water Engineering (targeted for 2025)
  • Rail Engineering (targeted for 2025)

The following list of 6 existing AoP are in the process of being reclassified as Specialisations:

  • Oil and Gas Pipeline Engineering
  • Heritage and Conservation Engineering
  • Naval Architecture
  • Subsea Engineering
  • Pressure Equipment Design Verification
  • Amusement Rides and Devices Engineering

Each of the above AoPs and Specialisations are in different stages of the process involving their respective stakeholder groups.
