Partnership to boost SAF industry

The world’s largest battery electric ferry is being built in Australia: What will power it?  

  

Tasmanian company Incat is building a fully battery-powered catamaran, it will use a battery-electric propulsion system and waterjets from Finnish technology giant Wärtsilä. Rooftop solar supplies more than 50 per cent of main grid’s power demand for first time   

  

Rooftop solar has supplied more than 50% of Australia’s main grid demand for the first time, solar was close to supplying 50% in the same week which was a record 49.3%. Now on a day in October, the output of rooftop solar PV from Australian households and businesses reached 50.4 per cent.  

   

A Consumer-Focused Net Zero Energy System - AEMC report  

  

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has released its first report on "A Consumer-Focused Net Zero Energy System,"   this report is designed to be a guide for AEMC in relation to the energy transition. World Energy Outlook 2024 - IEA's annual energy analysis and projections  

  

The World Energy Outlook 2024 report discusses the energy challenges facing the world and the potential pathways to a cleaner energy future. The report highlights the need for increased investment in clean technologies and the importance of energy security, affordability, and sustainability. Additionally, it explores the impact of geopolitical tensions and climate change on the energy landscape.  

   

Charging ahead with EV technology  

This article talks about the effects of electric vehicles on the grid in Australia. IEA (International Energy Agency) has released their Energy Efficiency 2024 Report. The report provides a global overview of energy efficiency developments.   

   

State of the energy market 2024 – AER report  

This 310-page annual report provides an overview of the state of the energy market in 2024. It is one of a series of reports produced by the Australian Energy Regulator that aim to educate those experienced in the energy transition and those just learning. It shows trends in energy intensity and demand, prices and policies.   

   

Billions in the bush: Renewable energy for regional prosperity – CEC and Farmers for climate action report  

This report by the Clean Energy Council and Farmers for climate action goes into the details for farmers combining their traditional farming with things like sheep and renewable farming using wind and solar options. It discusses the economic benefits and more details related to regional farmers and their renewable energy options.   

   

Retailer reliability obligation exemption for scheduled bi-directional units – AEMC  

This article discusses the final ruling and the completed rule change meaning that the rule exempts connection points for batteries, pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) and other forms of storage assets from being liable under the Retailer Reliability Obligation (RRO)  

   

Securing the future of customer energy resources through public key infrastructure (PKI)  

  

Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is looking like a solution to coordinating consumer energy resources (CER). ENA and Synergy are teaming up to deliver a single public key infrastructure (PKI) technology for the energy sector to secure communications with CER.  

   

Making the ISP robust to policy change and clear on costs  

  

This is about another rule change that at this point is still pending. The AEMC received a rule change request from the Centre for Independent Studies to amend the National Electricity Rules to clarify the role of the Integrated System Plan as a whole of system plan.    

   

NEM Reform Implementation Roadmap v5 – AEMO

SA secures world’s first 100% hydrogen-capable gas turbines  

  

South Australia has scored big with the world's first 100% hydrogen-capable gas turbines. This will support South Australia’s Hydrogen Jobs plan by using zero-emission, future-ready generation technology.   

   

AER reports on Q3 2024 high electricity price events  

  

This Australian Energy Regulator Report discusses the high electricity prices experienced nationally for quarter 3. Some of the reasons listed for high prices include network limitations, high demand and very low wind output.  

   

CSIRO spin-off raises record amount to fund solar heat and power tech, get industry off gas  

  

CSIRO’s spin-off company FPR Energy has promised to deliver zero emissions, 24/7 heat and power that is both technically and economically competitive with gas. Find out more about where they got their funding and how they are going to deliver these promises.   

   

Making the National Electricity Market fit for purpose – Chris Bowen  

  

This media release by the Department of Climate Change Energy, the Environment and Water talks about how the Albanese Government has commenced a review into how Australia’s largest electricity grid and market will operate in the coming decades, to keep costs low for households and businesses while better managing the rapid increase and integration of rooftop solar and utility-scale reliable renewables.    

   

AEMC finalises landmark reform to accelerate smart meter rollout  

  

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has today made a final rule requiring universal smart meter deployment across the National Electricity Market by 2030, delivering benefits sooner to consumers while ensuring strong customer protections.     

   

CSIRO electrolyser pilot demonstrates efficiency and durability at Bluescope Steel Plant  

  

CSIRO has been working with BlueScope on tubular solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) technology, this is different to conventional hydrogen electrolysers because it doesn't rely heavily on water to split water into hydrogen and oxygen – instead, it uses waste heat and electricity to produce hydrogen with greater efficiency.
